The article is about a Chinese man named Zheng Minsheng who stabbed eight children to death and wounded five others at an elementary school in eastern China on March 23, 2010.
First of all, Zheng was a community doctor who probably earned a stable amount of money every month. Because of being frustrated by “failures in his romantic life and in society”, he decided to go and stab eight innocent school-children to death. If everybody in the world was as narrow-minded as Zheng, then after the 2008-2009 global financial crises, wouldn’t everybody have taken out their weapons and killed everyone they saw?
Cases like Zheng’s one often occurs in China and social workers normally discuss ways to solve the problem in a suitable manner with them. Zheng was a doctor who should have seen a variety of people during his career so why would his thinking be so strange? By being a doctor he should be quite wealthy so why would he bother about romance or the society?
Moreover, due to the media coverage of Zheng’s murder case, a lot of copycats aroused. A total of six knife attacks occurred in China over the past few months although security was tightened around schools. The attacks were all in primary schools and the targets were all school children. Why would someone attack school children when the problems to their miserable lives would still exist?
To provide a remedy to the problem, I think that the schools should make better precautions. Other than the security guards already situated there, everyone entering the school grounds should have an identity card. Strangers/visitors would need to sign in at the office in order to ensure there are no suspicious people entering the school. Not only that, metal detectors can be installed at the school gates so that no one can even bring a knife into the school.
In conclusion, events like this normally occur due to mental disorders in people. If we treat those with problems and treat them in a nice way, there’s no way that they would want to harm us at all, and we will all live together in harmony.
